President-elect Donald Trump’s outlandish threat to seize control of the Panama Canal was made as his companies face ongoing financial and legal troubles in the Central American nation. During a Sunday speech and in subsequent posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump whined about Panama’s canal fees and suggested that the U.S. could take the Panama Canal back from the Central American nation. However, an ongoing tax evasion lawsuit reveals the Trump Organization’s troubled history with Panama. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, highly unfair. Especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama, I say very foolishly, by the United States,” Trump said at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Arizona. He continued : “If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly, and without question.” Not surprisingly, Panama’s president has already responded to Trump’s laughable comments. He essentially said that Panama’s canal is not for sale—which it’s not. Built at the turn of the 20th century, the canal was peacefully turned over to the Panamanians on Dec. 31, 1999, as a result of a 1979 treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter. But the president-elect’s not-so-subtle threats could be yet another instance of him holding grudges and seeking retribution against his political and financial enemies. And as his second term in the White House looms, Trump’s statements regarding Panama serve as another reminder of how he may wield power once officially in office. Indeed, Trump’s comments likely weren’t made in isolation. In 2019, ProPublica revealed that the owners of a hotel tower in Panama City that formerly operated under the Trump brand accused Trump Panama Hotel Management LLC and Trump International Hotels Management LLC of not paying the 12.5% required taxes to the local government. A legal filing at the time accused the companies of “intentionally evading taxes,” which left the hotel owners liable for millions of dollars. “Had Trump been honest with Ithaca about its failure to pay taxes on the management fees it earned and its failure to properly report employee salaries to Panama’s social security agency, Ithaca would have never entered into the [licensing deal],” read an updated complaint filed in 2020, according to Newsweek . While there’s no direct evidence linking Trump’s recent threat to the ongoing tax case, which is still pending in New York District Court, the timing of it all hasn’t escaped notice. Some prominent political commentators have suggested that Trump’s sudden interest in controlling the Panama Canal is derived from his companies’ outstanding tax issues. This wouldn’t be shocking if proven true. Since Election Day, the president-elect has made thinly veiled threats against and trolled several foreign nations, including Canada and Greenland . It’s entirely possible, then, that Panama is just the latest foreign nation to stoke Trump’s ire. The problem is that come January, the petty grudge-holder will have the power of the world’s most powerful military behind him. For a radio station that doesn't care about ratings, 2MBS Fine Music Sydney has found an audience of loyal listeners all over the world. or signup to continue reading Veteran Drive program presenter Michael Morton-Evans even has one dedicated fan on the Isle of Wight in the UK, who sits by her fireplace to listen to his show. 2MBS was Australia's very first station on the FM radio band, hitting the airwaves at noon on December 15, 1974, beating Melbourne's 3MBS and Brisbane's 4ZZZ by a matter of months. The station in Sydney's St Leonards is celebrating 50 years of filling the airwaves with music - classical for the most part, but also jazz, blues and other genres. Morton-Evans has penned a history of 2MBS to mark the milestone, and believes it's the only volunteer-run station in the world to have lasted half a century. "It means everything to real lovers of classical music, we all love doing it, they all love listening to it," he told AAP. Ahead of a recent program, he's in the studio lining up traffic alerts and weather reports and just the right music to keep Sydney motorists calm during peak hour, starting with Russian composer Anton Arensky and Frenchman Georges Bizet. On a good day, the FM radio signal travels all the way to Newcastle and Wollongong, and Berrima in the southern highlands, while listeners further afield can tune in via the station's online stream and listening app. Three times a day the flow of classical music is interrupted by jazz programs, for those who happen to like that sort of thing, said Morton-Evans. "There's a sort of feeling around here among the jazz people that I don't like jazz, but it's not true - I do like jazz," he said. "Our jazz presenters are fantastic, they are so knowledgeable, they're almost worth listening to." One of those presenters, Jeannie McInnes, airs her popular program Jazz Rhythm with a different topic each week, ranging from Jackson Pollock's jazz playlist, to the sound of the colour green. "If you just want to hear the music, put on Spotify - if you want to learn something about the music, listen to the radio," she told AAP. Presenters such as Planet Jazz host Xavier Bichon revel in music of all kinds: a recent weekend saw him at a classical performance in the afternoon, and a Pearl Jam concert a few hours later. 2MBS does not rely on government grants and is entirely funded by its loyal listeners, some of whom have been very generous indeed. In 2010 one donor, Stefan Kruger, left the station $3 million in his will, enabling 2MBS to build a recording studio complete with grand piano, broadcast studios and a massive music library. Though most of the library is stored digitally these days, old technology is still kept on stand by including turntables, a reel to reel tape player, and a cassette deck. Before there was any of this equipment - or even a station to broadcast from - David James was the very first manager of 2MBS, helping it win a broadcast licence. Half a century later he still volunteers at the station, probably because he likes punishment, he jokes. "Radio is in my blood ... I just don't want to look at any other voluntary job anywhere." It's the people as much as the music, helped by the station's monthly wine and pizza nights, he said. There's also tea, coffee and biscuits on hand to fuel the station's 200 volunteers, such as former presenter Di Cox, 84. Cox has been volunteering at the station for 45 years and is still a regular visitor, selecting music for an upcoming program From Handel to Haydn. "Obviously I love it, because I've always said I'll never leave," she said. 2MBS is marking its milestone with a special retrospective program on Sunday at midday - exactly 50 years to the hour since its very first broadcast. It will also host a station open day on February 1, to commemorate its very first such event 50 years ago. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Do you have $40,000 to spend on a new mid-sized family SUV? There's a fair chance you're considering either one or both of the and . or signup to continue reading Why? Well the second-generation HS was launched just a few months ago, receiving a positive reception from critics, while the CX-5 has been among the top-selling medium SUVs for several years. Indeed, the CX-5 outsold its Chinese rival by a ratio of 4:1 last month, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the better car. A budget of just over $40k limits buyers to a basic CX-5 Maxx Sport, whereas the same money can score a flagship MG HS Essence. So, which is the better buy? Here's how the pair stack up on the spec sheet. MG wins on price, undercutting the CX-5 across the range. Even in flagship Essence guise, the HS is $1230 cheaper than the CX-5 G25 Maxx Sport – a variant at the lower end of the CX-5 lineup. Mazda offers a variety of powertrains with the popular CX-5, but turbocharged models are out of reach at this price point. As such, we'll be comparing the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder to MG's 1.5-litre turbo. The turbo four found in all MG HS variants falls 15kW short of the naturally aspirated CX-5 engine, but it boasts more low-end torque and comes with an extra ratio. Both cars are front-wheel drive. There's little to split the pair from an efficiency standpoint either, although the MG requires dearer 95 octane premium unleaded fuel. While neither the HS nor CX-5 can be called a workhorse, the Mazda offers superior towing capacity for weekend hauling. The HS is 80mm longer and 45mm wider than the CX-5, with a 35mm longer wheelbase. That gives it a larger footprint on the road, even despite it being 20mm shorter than the Mazda. While that's unlikely to make or break the ownership experience, it does translate to a considerable difference in cargo capacity. The new HS has 69L more boot space than its rival, which expands to 144L of extra room with the second row of seats folded down. As with all new MG models, the HS is covered by an "industry-leading" 10-year, 250,000-kilometre warranty. Roadside assistance is also offered for the duration of the warranty and is activated each time the vehicle is serviced within the MG network. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-5 is backed by a shorter five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km. MG's decade of capped-price servicing promises owners certainty and long-term peace of mind, although there's not much to separate the cost of servicing both models. The new MG HS wears a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on testing conducted in August this year, whereas the Mazda CX-5 is unrated, as its five-star ANCAP safety rating from 2017 has now lapsed. The HS Essence is not only newer than the CX-5 Maxx Sport, but it also occupies a higher position in the respective model ranges. That quickly becomes evident when you compare the pair on standard equipment. For one, the MG wins on the technology front, with larger 12.3-inch interior screens, a wireless phone charger, and a beefier eight-speaker sound system. While the Mazda still ticks most of the essential boxes for a family SUV buyer, it's carrying older tech that's due for a refresh when the next-generation CX-5 launches between 2025 and 2027. For example, the digital instrument cluster measures just 7.0 inches, and the sound system is limited to six speakers. Having said that, the CX-5 is alone in offering wireless smartphone mirroring and a head-up display. Both cars come standard with satellite navigation and DAB+ radio. The HS Essence may be the cheaper car, but you'd struggle to tell from comparing the spec sheets. Unique features to the MG include powered front seats with heating, a power tailgate, PVC upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof, and the HS matches its Mazda rival in other key areas. However, Mazda's recent premium push gives the CX-5 an edge in quality of materials. The steering wheel and gear shifter in the Maxx Sport are trimmed in real-deal leather – an upgrade over the synthetic trims found in the MG. You also get reclining rear seats in the CX-5, a handy feature in vehicle that's likely to be bought by families who regularly rely on the second row. If this was a comparison between the first-generation MG HS and current CX-5, the Mazda would win hands down. But MG has stepped things up over the last 12 months, and in many ways the new HS is a triumph for the Chinese manufacturer. Not only does the flagship HS Essence stack up on the spec sheet, but the new 1.5-litre drivetrain is extremely effective despite its small displacement. The engine is sufficiently responsive around town, and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is smooth and quick-shifting in the vein of a Volkswagen unit, without the associated low-speed jerkiness. On the other hand, the naturally aspirated engine under the bonnet of the CX-5 has to work much harder, consuming more fuel in the process. The CX-5 also concedes ground in other key categories including technology, cabin space, and aftersales support. After all, MG offers the best warranty in the business right now. So, it's a clear win to MG? Yes, with a significant caveat. The advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) in the HS are unbelievably poorly calibrated, an increasingly common issue that ruins the driving experience of otherwise well-sorted vehicles. Until MG addresses the problem, it's up to owners to adjust ADAS settings to their liking every time the car is switched on – a frustrating inconvenience. Formula 1 has confirmed that it has reached an agreement in principle with General Motors to add an 11th team to the grid for 2026, with the new outfit likely to be branded as Cadillac. The chance of the GM bid joining the grid appeared to be dead in the water just months ago after initially being led by Andretti Global but has now accelerated to being a fully-fledged team for the season after next. Editor's Picks Why F1 rejected Andretti bid to join the grid for 2025, 2026 299d Laurence Edmondson Andretti could join F1 grid as GM team 3d Associated Press F1 had initially rejected an Andretti-GM bid and closed the door on that specific proposal until 2028. The sport has had 10 teams on the grid since 2017, and that looked likely to remain the case for the foreseeable future. But in an announcement on Monday, F1 said it had "maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024." F1 said GM has "achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the eleventh team GM/Cadillac." GM has also made a commitment to enter as a single engine supplier at a later time, according to the F1 news release, although it will need a customer deal with an existing manufacturer for its debut season in 2026 and likely for 2027 too. F1 teams had been lukewarm about the original bid led by Michael Andretti, son of 1978 world champion Mario. Michael Andretti had angered F1 teams and the sport's owner, Liberty Media, by calling the sport "greedy" for blocking his attempts to join the grid. He stepped away from his leadership role at Andretti Global last month. While opposed to the Andretti side of the bid, F1 was very open to the idea of bringing a manufacturer of General Motors' size and stature to the grid, especially if it would commit to building its own engines in future. The entry of a team branded Cadillac would be another huge boost for the sport as its popularity continues to boom in the U.S. It remains to be seen whether the team will bring an American driver, but it now means there are two additional spots on the grid for emerging and existing talent. The American team will be based in a UK factory near Silverstone racetrack that Andretti Global started work on earlier this year. Greg Maffei, the outgoing CEO and president of Liberty Media, said: "With Formula 1's continued growth plans in the U.S., we have always believed that welcoming an impressive US brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid and GM as a future power unit supplier could bring additional value and interest to the sport. "We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1. We are excited to move forward with the application process for the GM/Cadillac team to enter the Championship in 2026." Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, added: "As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It's an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world's premier racing series, and we're committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world. "This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM's engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level."(All times Eastern) Schedule subject to change and/or blackouts Monday, Dec. 9 COLLEGE BASKETBALL (MEN’S) 6:30 p.m. BTN — Minnesota at Indiana 8 p.m. CBSSN — Abilene Christian at Baylor COLLEGE SOCCER (WOMEN’S) 7 p.m. ESPNU — NCAA Tournament: Wake Forest vs. North Carolina, Championship NBA BASKETBALL 7:30 p.m. NBATV — New York at Toronto NFL FOOTBALL 8:15 p.m. ABC — Cincinnati at Dallas ESPN — Cincinnati at Dallas ESPN2 — Cincinnati at Dallas (MNF with Peyton and Eli) NHL HOCKEY 7 p.m. NHLN — Chicago at N.Y. What happens next to workers in 'slavery-like conditions' at BYD's site in Brazil?Congress to meet in the new year New Caledonia's Congress has been convened on 7 January 2025 to elect a new government. This comes as the current government and its President Louis Mapou are now in caretaker mode, following the resignation earlier this week of one of its members Jérémie Katidjo-Monnier and his whole party, Calédonie Ensemble. Congress President, Veylma Falaeo confirmed the date as the main item for the sitting, to elect New Caledonia's 18th government. Before that, a sitting is scheduled on 30 December for the purposes of choosing the number of portfolios (between 5 and eleven ministers) the next government should have. The government of New Caledonia is made up of the parties represented at the Congress, under a proportional principle of "collegiality" - implying that all of its members and the parties they represent are supposed to work together. In his resignation letter, Katidjo-Monnier mentioned growing tensions between Mapou's government and the Congress MPs, especially as a result of the destructive and deadly insurrectional riots that started on 13 May. These included a controversial government-pushed plan to borrow up to €1 billion from France, under a "PS2R" (reconstruction, refoundation and salvage) plan to rebuild New Caledonia after the riots' damage (estimated at some €2.2 billion) and the subsequent thousands of job losses. Government President Louis Mapou's PS2R plan has been criticised by the Congress, which has been advocating for a different approach: a five-year reconstruction plan to secure funds from France, but in the form non-refundable grants, not reimbursable loans which Congress regarded as unsustainable. Katidjo-Monnier condemned the lack of "solidarity" between Congress and the Government. Curfew in Noumea Authorities in New Caledonia have reintroduced a temporary curfew for Noumea and the Greater Noumea area. Although the curfew that was introduced mid-May after the riots was lifted for the whole of New Caledonia early December, the French High Commission on Friday announced new temporary restrictions between 31 December 2024 and 2 January 2025. This will be imposed between 1 and 6 am in Nouméa and the neighbouring cities of Dumbéa, Mont-Dore and Païta. Public rallies, marches and demonstrations are also banned during the same period. The High Commission said this was in view of a "special vigilance" required following the riots, but also due to a rising number of road fatalities that have occurred since the initial curfew was lifted. Another motive was to prevent potential "disruptions to public order" during the festive season. Anyone found in breach of the new measure and unable to justify his or her whereabouts will face a fine of 16,000 French Pacific Francs ( US $140). Loyalty Islands Province New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands Province elected a new President on Friday. He is Mathias Waneux, from the pro-independence Union-Calédonienne (UC)-FLNKS caucus. Waneux was the sole candidate for the provincial assembly's top job, and he received 13 of the 14 votes. He replaces Jacques Lalié, who on 26 November 2024 was found guilty of corruption-related charges and was sentenced to one year jail and two years of ineligibility, with immediate effect. During the same sitting, Assembly members also elected three deputy Speakers: a former provincial President, Néko Hnepeune (UC-FLNKS) [1st deputy Speaker], Wali Wahetra (PALIKA) [2nd deputy Speaker] and Charles Yeiwene (UC-FLNKS) [3rd deputy Speaker]. New Caledonia's provincial system has three assemblies: one for the Southern Province (where the capital Nouméa is located), one for the Northern Province (still on the main island, Grande Terre) and one for the Loyalty Islands. New Overseas Minister New Overseas minister Manuel Valls, who was appointed on Monday as part of the new French government of Prime Minister François Bayrou, intends to tackle New Caledonia's numerous issues in the spirit of dialogue of former Socialist Prime Minister Michel Rocard. Rocard is credited as the main French negotiator in talks between pro-France and pro-independence leaders that led in 1988 to the "Matignon-Oudinot" agreements that put an end to half a decade of quasi-civil war. At the time 26 years old, Valls was a young advisor in Rocard's team. Valls said Rocard's dialogue-based approach remained his "political DNA". 36 years later, now 62, he told French national broadcasters France Inter and Outre-mer la Première that the two priorities were economic recovery (after destructive riots and damage in May 2024, estimated at some 2.2 billion Euros), as well as resuming political dialogue between local antagonistic parties concerning New Caledonia's political future. On the economic side, short-lived former Prime Minister Michel Barnier had committed up to one billion Euros in loans for New Caledonia's recovery. But France's Parliament has not yet endorsed its 2025 budget, "which poses a number of problems regarding commitments made by (Barnier). On the political talks that were expected to start a lead to a comprehensive and inclusive agreement between France, the pro-independence and pro-France camps, Valls said his approach was "dialogue" with the view of "going forward." "We don't have much time (...) We have to find a common path", he said, adding future political solutions should be "innovative" for the French Pacific archipelago. Initial schedules for those talks to take place foresaw an agreement to arrive some time at the end of March 2025. But no talks have started yet. The Union Calédonienne (UC), one of the main components of the pro-independence Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), said nothing could happen until it holds its annual congress, sometime during the "second half of January 2025". Insurance payments for Noumea New Caledonia's capital Noumea has finally obtained some US $43.5 million in insurance indemnities following the destructive riots that took place in May 2024. Noumea Mayor Sonia Lagarde told the city's municipal council just before Christmas the sum was confirmed by Nouméa's private insurance company Helvetia. She pointed out this was "very good news", because the sum (five billion French Pacific Francs, CFP) is a significant part of the total estimated and claimed damage (Six billion CFP) to public buildings (including schools, libraries) and infrastructure. Lagarde hoped riot-damaged private companies, who are still waiting for their insurers' disbursements, will eventually receive similar news. After the May 2024 riots, which entailed massive burning and looting, most private insurance companies represented in New Caledonia have opted to remove the "riots" clause from their contracts in the French Pacific archipelago.
