Israel Strikes Houthi Rebels in Yemen’s Capital While the WHO Chief Says He Was Meters AwaySEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Kenneth Walker III on injured reserve Thursday after his ankle injury in last week's loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Walker will miss the rest of the regular season and could only return in the NFC Championship if the Seahawks make the playoffs and win two postseason games. As of Thursday, to get into the postseason, the Seahawks would need to win their final two regular season games and would need the Arizona Cardinals to beat the Los Angeles Rams. Before his latest injury, Walker rushed for 573 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games. Walker was sidelined on two separate occasions this season due to oblique and calf injuries. Zach Charbonnet will replace Walker as the Seahawks' lead running back for the rest of the regular season. He's filled in capably during Walker's absence, averaging 79 rushing yards and scoring six touchdowns in four starts for Seattle. Down its starting running back, the Seahawks face the Chicago Bears on Thursday night with their season on the line. RELATED: NFC Playoff Scenarios: How Seahawks could find way into NFL's postseason

More info Scotland prodigy Ben Doak was on target for Middlesbrough - but they blew a three goal lead in a Boxing Day thriller against Sheffield Wednesday. The Liverpool loanee, who has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under the management of former Manchester United star Michael Carrick on Wearside, netted for the second time this season - and it came in an unlikely manner, as the diminutive attacker stooped to head in a Finn Azaz cross. It was his seventh goal contribution in 18 games this season, but despite Boro racing into a 3-0 half-time lead they were forced to settle for just a point. After setting up Doak's opener, Azaz...
Michael Croley | (TNS) Bloomberg News In the old days of 2016, when golfers visited the Dormie Club in West End, North Carolina — 15 minutes from the hotbed of American golf, Pinehurst — they were greeted by a small, single-wide trailer and a rugged pine straw parking lot. A gate has been installed at the club’s entrance and a long driveway leads to a grand turnaround that sweeps you past a new modern clubhouse that’s all right angles, with floor-to-ceiling glass. Seconds after you exit your car, valets are zipping up in golf carts, taking your name, then your bags, handing you keys to your own golf cart, and then zipping off to drop your luggage in the four-bedroom cottage where you’ll stay. A short walk past an expansive putting green you’ll find the pro shop — and then you’ll see the club’s most elegant feature: its golf course. The changes have all come about because Dormie Club was acquired in 2017 by the Dormie Network, a national group that owns seven private golf facilities from Nebraska to New Jersey. (“Dormie” is a word for being ahead in golf — the names were coincidences.) A key to the network’s success has been its ability to find clubs ripe for acquisition, with outstanding golf courses and existing on-site lodging or the room to build it, says Zach Peed, president of the company and its driving force. After investing in Arbor Links Golf Club in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in late 2015, Peed believed he saw an opening in the golf market: a new model of hospitality for traveling professionals who wanted a pure golf experience that eschewed the pools and pickleball courts of their home clubs. His clubs would become dream golf-only getaways for avid players and their pals. “Dormie Network’s concept was sparked by having played competitive golf in college, combined with an element of experiencing and understanding hospitality,” says Peed. “It made sense to blend the two to create golf trips that had more value than just playing golf. We want genuine hospitality to help create unforgettable memories and new friendships.” Part of that formula has been in the lodging strategy; in North Carolina, 15 four-bedroom cottages now are a short golf cart ride from the main clubhouse. In each, golfers all have their own king-size bed and en suite bathroom. A large common room is dominated by a flatscreen television along with a well-stocked bar and snacks. That ability to be both social, or tucked away in your room, extends to the expansive new clubhouse, where a high-ceilinged bar area with blond wood creates an inviting space for dining and drinking, and several hideaway rooms allow for more private diners with just your group. So far, their commitment to hospitality has been helping them expand in both membership and club usage in the increasingly competitive market for traveling golfers. Major players such as Bandon Dunes, Pinehurst Resort, and the Cabot Collection have created — or renovated — a new paradigm where golfers get dining and lodging that’s as showcase-worthy as the courses they play. Comfortable sheets and options beyond pub food aren’t luxuries anymore, but staples for many group trips. Dormie has answered that call by focusing on both the big details and the small ones, like having the dew wiped off each golf cart at dawn outside guest cottages before the day begins or having a tray of cocktails delivered to golfers as their final putt falls on the 18th green. These touches may seem over-the-top, but they stand out in a world where golf travel is increasingly popular — and expensive — after the pandemic lockdowns. Since 2020 there has been an explosion in participation in the sport, with new golfers picking up the game and avid golfers playing more: According to the National Golf Foundation, a record 531 million rounds were played in 2023, surpassing the high of 529 million set in 2021. Supreme Golf, a public golf booking website, reports in its latest analysis that the average cost of a tee time has increased to $49 in 2024 from $38 in 2019, a 30% increase. Those cost increases are also on par (pun intended) with the costs of private clubs and initiation fees during that same period, where membership rosters that were dwindling pre-COVID now have waitlists 50 to 60 people deep, according to Jason Becker, co-founder and chief executive officer of Golf Life Navigators, which matches homebuyers with golf course communities. “There’s been an absolute run on private golf. If we use southwest Florida as an example, where there are 158 golf communities, this time last November, only five had memberships available,” he said. That inability to find a club close to home has pushed avid golfers to look farther afield, choosing national memberships at clubs that require traveling, usually via plane, to play. Dormie has capitalized on this growing segment, offering two types of memberships: First, a national membership, where members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues just as they would at a local club, but instead of one club they have access to seven. The second option is a signature membership for companies, “which allows businesses to use our properties for entertainment needs and requires a multiyear commitment,” Peed says. The network also offers a limited number of regional memberships for those living within a certain distance of one of its clubs. Dormie Network declined to provide the cost of memberships or monthly dues and wouldn’t give membership numbers, but the clubs are structured to lodge roughly 60 golfers, max, on-site at any given property at any time. The total number of beds across the network’s portfolio of properties has increased from 84 in 2019 to 432 today. It saw a jump from 10,000 room nights in 2019 to 48,000 in 2023. This September, Dormie opened GrayBull in Maxwell, in Nebraska’s, Sandhills region. Dormie Network tabbed David McLay Kidd to build the course, who also built the original course at Oregon’s famed Bandon Dunes. Kidd says of the property GrayBull sits on, “It’s like the Goldilocks thing: not too flat, not too steep. It’s kind of in a bowl that looks inwards, and there are no bad views.” That kind of remote destination, where the long-range views are only Mother Nature or other golf holes, is what drives many traveling golfers these days. Peed says his team leaned on years of knowledge from Dormie’s acquisitions as they built GrayBull, which started construction in 2022. “We had an understanding of how our members and guests use the clubs that allowed us to take a blank canvas in the Sandhills of Nebraska and combine all of the greatest aspects of each Dormie property into one.” ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. AdvertisementPresident-elect Donald Trump on Sunday tried to defuse panicky liberal fearmongering over him and instead gin up excitement for his sweeping agenda for the country. Throughout the 2024 campaign, liberal foes seized on Trump’s rhetoric to paint him as someone who intended to rip up institutional norms and was hellbent on vengeance. But Trump, in a prerecorded chat with NBC’s “Meet the Press” — his first sit-down broadcast television interview since winning the election — the 78-year-old Republican confronted many of those concerns head-on and seemingly strived to portray himself as a pragmatist. Here are some of the top takeaways from Trump’s interview: Hands-off approach to DOJ and FBI The incoming president signaled that he would largely be deferring to instead of directing Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and loyalist Kash Patel in their potential posts at the helm of the Justice Department and FBI, respectively. Trump was asked if he wanted Bondi to investigate special counsel Smith and the team that had been prosecuting the president-elect for several alleged crimes. “I think he’s very corrupt,” Trump said of Smith. Still, “I want her to do what she wants to do,” Trump said of Bondi and any probes she may undertake. Trump also was asked about the list of 60 so-called “Deep State” actors that Patel has reportedly compiled. The president-elect was asked whether he wanted to see the people investigated. “No,” Trump said — although he left the door open for Patel to do so. “I think he’s going to do what he thinks is right,” Trump said. “If they think that someone was dishonest, or crooked or corrupt politicians, I think he probably has an obligation to do it.” Asked to clarify if he would instruct such an investigation, Trump responded, “No, not at all.” ‘They should go to jail’ One moment from the wide-ranging interview that is sure to fire up critics came when the president-elect suggested that members of the since-defunct House Select Jan. 6 Committee should be jailed. The panel had been probing Trump’s alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riots on Capitol Hill. “For what they did, honestly they should go to jail,” Trump vented about members of the committee. But later, when asked if he would direct his US attorney general and FBI director to go after them,” Trump replied, “No, not at all. “I think they’ll have to look at that. But I’m not going to [ask]. I’m going to focus on drill baby drill,” Trump said, referring to the push for more oil and gas production. The Biden administration is mulling whether to issue blanket pardons for individuals whom Trump may target such as the committee’s members, including former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), according to multiple reports . Dramatic cuts to Social Security are off the table Ever since the GOP’s election victory, Republican lawmakers have expressed renewed energy in taking on the national debt and slashing the government. Trump further fueled this excitement by naming entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as co-heads of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an entity that is not actually a government department. But he ruled out making dramatic cuts to at least one program, Social Security. “We’re not touching Social Security other than we might make it more efficient, but the people are going to get what they get,” Trump said. “And we’re not raising [requirement] ages or any of that stuff.” Won’t fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell early In October, Trump drew unease from market analysts by contending that a president should have some sway over monetary policy and by being noncommittal about whether he’d remove Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell before his term expires. “No, I don’t think so. I don’t see it,” Trump replied when asked about whether he’d boot Powell, whose term ends in May 2026. Trump nominated Powell to helm the Fed in late 2017, and President Biden opted to retain him. In other countries, central banks that aren’t sufficiently separated from the political process often become more susceptible to issues such as inflation. Will stay in NATO if ... Trump also clarified that he intends to keep the US in NATO, provided that the powerful military alliance “pays its bills. “They have to pay their bills. If they pay their bills, absolutely,” Trump replied when asked about remaining in the alliance. “NATO’s taking advantage of us,” he said. “They take advantage of us on trade. ... And on top of that, we defend them. So it’s a double whammy.” NATO members are expected to pony up 2% of their nation’s gross domestic product on defense. In the wake of the Ukraine war, all but eight of the 32-nation bloc meet that obligation, according to data from the Atlantic Council. Trump added that Ukraine “probably should” expect less military assistance from the US under his watch. He revealed that he hasn’t spoken with Russian leader Vladimir Putin “recently.” Backs off threat about prosecuting Biden In August 2023, Trump suggested on Truth Social that he would name a special counsel or special prosecutor to go after President Biden, presumably over the commander-in-chief’s alleged dealings with son Hunter’s supposed influence-peddling. “No, I’m not doing that unless I find something that is reasonable, but that’s not going to be my decision, that’s going to be Pam Bondi’s decision and to a different extent, Kash Patel,” Trump told NBC. “I’m really looking to make our country successful. I’m not looking to go back into the past,” Trump explained. “Retribution will be through success.” Doesn’t think he’ll change on abortion Trump deviated from Republican orthodoxy on abortion in April when he declared that he would not pursue federal restrictions on the controversial procedure. During the NBC interview, Trump suggested he would stick to that, although he gave himself some wiggle room. “I’ll probably stay with exactly what I’ve been saying for the last two years. And the answer is no,” Trump said when asked about such restrictions, including access to abortion pills. “Things change. I think they change. I hate to go on shows like Joe Biden, ‘I’m not going to give my son a pardon,’ ” Trump mused, referring to Biden’s reversal on pardoning his son. “I don’t like putting myself in a position like that. “Things do change. But I don’t think it’s going to change at all.” Protecting “Dreamers,” ending birthright citizenship Trump repeated his call to end so-called birthright citizenship, in which illegal migrants can cross the border and have children on US soil who will automatically become citizens because of the 14th Amendment. But as for “Dreamers,” individuals whose families already brought them illegally into the country at a young age and who have since grown up here, Trump suggested he would work with Democrats to figure it out. “The Dreamers are going to come later, and we have to do something about the Dreamers, because these are people that have been brought here at a very young age, and many of these are middle-aged people now,” Trump said. “I will work with the Democrats on a plan, and [see] if we can come up with a plan. But the Democrats have made it very, very difficult to do anything. Republicans are very open to the Dreamers.” No family separation for migrants — although they could all get the boot together The president-elect also underscored that he was keen on avoiding a repeat of the controversial family separation policy that stoked blowback during his first administration. “I don’t want to be breaking up families,” Trump said. “So the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back. “We don’t have to separate families,” Trump said. “We’ll send the whole family very humanely back to the country where they came.” Moderator Kristen Welker pressed him about the implications for children who were in the US legally despite their parents being present illegally. “Then the family has a choice: The person that came in illegally can go out or they can all go out together,” he said. Trump said he would prioritize deporting violent illegal immigrants who have committed other crimes. Day One Trump teased that he would pursue a busy Day One agenda jammed-packed with executive orders on a range of issues such as the economy and the border. “I won on groceries. Very simple word, groceries,” Trump reflected on his election victory, referring to the economy. “When you buy apples, when you buy bacon, when you buy eggs, they would double and triple the price over a short period of time,” he said, referring to the previous administration. The president-elect also indicated that he would mull pardons for Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol rioters when he assumes the Oval Office once again. “I’m going to be acting very quickly,” Trump teased. “I’m going to look at everything. We’re going to look at individual cases.”

Last week, NSA Ajit Doval travelled to Beijing and held tallks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi under the framework of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary dispute. The decision to revive the SR dialogue mechanism was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23, two days after India and China firmed up the disengagement pact , effectively ending the over four-year border standoff along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. On the situation along the LoC with Pakistan, the ministry said relentless counter terror operations were carried out while constantly reviewing emerging and future threats to national security. Infrastructure development in border areas being one of the key imperatives of operational preparedness was given impetus in consonance with the 'Viksit Bharat Vision' of the government, it said. "The perspective plan of BRO (Border Roads Organisation) has been finalised till year 2028, wherein, 470 roads of approximately 27,000 kms will be contructed. The perspective plan of other agencies roads is being synchronised with the plans of BRO," it said. The report also mentioned the Indian Navy's deployment in critical sea lanes following the Israel-Hamas conflict. "The high tempo of operational deployments of Indian Navy assets continues to be maintained, with a close watch on Indian flagged merchant vessels and vessels carrying critical commodities for India," it said. Over the last one year, in response to Houthi shipping attacks, and rising incidents of piracy in the Western Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy has deployed over 30 ships in the region and has responded to over 25 incidents, the ministry said. "The credible and swift actions of the Indian navy saved more than 400 lives, irrespective of the nationality of the crew. As of November 2024, Indian Navy has safely escorted over 230 Merchant Vessels, carrying over 90 Lakh Metric Tons of cargo, valued at over USD 4 billion," it said. The ministry said Indian Navy's efforts have garnered international and national acclaim, consolidating its position as a 'preferred security partner' and 'first responder'. It also said that the Central Servicing Development Organisation is taking forward the tri-services integration of common aviation assets with the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. The ministry said the IAF is in the process of establishing six new defence wings, commencing with Spain, Armenia and Ivory Coast, while continuously exploring avenues to increase its presence in the Indo Pacific region, Europe, the Americas as well as Africa. The report said defence exports reached a record high of Rs 21,083 crore in financial year 2023-24, registering a growth of 32.5 per cent over the last financial year. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Joseph Pinion had 22 points and eight rebounds, Dyondre Dominguez added 19 points and Arkansas State built a double-digit first-half lead to beat No. 16 Memphis 85-72 on Sunday. Pinion was 7 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 11 from outside the arc, giving the Red Wolves their second straight win and their first over a ranked team since 1991. Taryn Todd finished with 17 points for Arkansas State (7-3). PJ Haggerty led Memphis (7-2) with 29 points, and Dain Dainja finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Arkansas State held a double-digit lead for most of the game and led 68-57 with 8 minutes left. That was enough for the Red Wolves to defeat the Tigers, snapping a seven-game losing streak to Memphis. Arkansas State: The Red Wolves certainly got the nationally ranked Tigers' attention in the first half after they shot 7 of 18 from 3-point range and built an 18-point lead. The lead got to single digits a couple of times in the second half, but Arkansas State answered the pressure. Memphis: The Tigers suffered through a miserable first half, shooting under 20% late in the half. They turned up their defensive pressure, which cut into the lead, but Memphis never made a serious threat. Memphis got within 60-53 with 11 minutes left, but Arkansas State went on a 12-6 run that included 3-pointers from Pinion, Todd and Kobe Julien to stretch the Red Wolves' lead to 75-60 with 6:29 left in the game. Arkansas State's last win over a ranked team was when it defeated then-No. 21 New Orleans 76-65 in 1991. Arkansas State hosts UT-Arlington on Thursday, and Memphis travels to Clemson on Saturday. Lucy Johnson of Cheverus shoots in the second half against Scarborough on Sept. 12. She is the second straight Stags player to win the Miss Maine Field Hockey award after her sister, Lily, took it last year. Derek Davis/Staff Photographer AUGUSTA – After setting the career goals record, winning 71 of 72 games and earning three state championships, there was one more accolade for Lucy Johnson to win. She took care of that Sunday afternoon. The Cheverus senior was named the 26th winner of the Miss Maine Field Hockey award, becoming the second straight Stags player and member of the Johnson family to win it after sister Lily took it last year. “I was very nervous, but it’s great, and I’m very proud of the accomplishments myself and I’m glad that my sister and I get to share this bond, for sure,” Johnson said. “It shows that I have a lot of heart and dedication to the game. ... I’ve been playing since I was five, and I just can’t imagine my life without it.” Lucy Johnson after she was awarded Miss Maine Field Hockey on Sunday at the Augusta Civic Center. Drew Bonifant/Portland Press Herald It’s the second time two sisters have won the award, with the first being Greely’s Amanda and Julia Chase in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Johnson beat out Biddeford’s Ayla Lagasse for the award, and earned an honor many likely felt was inevitable since her sophomore season when she scored 49 goals, the second most goals tallied in a season. With 34 this fall, Johnson finished with 152 goals, 41 higher than the record she broke and 14 clear of Winthrop’s Madeline Wagner in second place. “It’s good ... to have something to reach for to make you a better player. I hope some girl out there right now sees that number, 152, and smashes it, and that’s how Lucy will know she really succeeded,” Cheverus coach Andrea Musante said. “When you see someone like Lucy and what she’s done, that’ll only help grow the game.” Johnson, who will play next alongside Lily at Boston University, said that legacy point has been significant to her as she’s wrapped up her high school field hockey career. “I definitely think so,” she said. “I try to set really good examples for many people in the future, and for people coming into Cheverus. I know a few of the younger girls, they’ve told me they look up to me and it really means a lot to me. I try to set that example for them, hopefully they see it through.” While much has been said about Johnson’s speed, stick handling, ball control and lethal shot, Musante said her competitiveness stood out most, which was exemplified in her playing through frequent knee pain this season and her ability to raise her game when the Stags needed it. “She would fight, she would show up and produce the same results no matter what the situation was,” she said. “She never laid down, it doesn’t matter if she was double- or tripled-team. She always found a way.” Musante pointed to the 2023 Class A final, when Johnson was marked heavily by Skowhegan defenders but still scored the winning goal with 58 seconds left in a 2-1 victory. Lucy Johnson of Cheverus celebrates after scoring her first of two goals against Biddeford on Nov. 6. She will play for Boston University next year. Derek Davis/Staff Photographer “It was like, ‘She showed up. She did it again,’ ” Musante said. “When she hits the field and the whistle blows, she has an incredible fire and passion.” It all culminated in the award Sunday, which Johnson said is more meaningful considering it follows Lily’s victory a year ago. In her acceptance speech, Johnson addressed her sister who was away at school, saying “no one has chemistry like us.” “It’s definitely very special,” she said. “I always think of her every day, I miss playing with her and I’m really excited to play with her next year so we can share this bond.” We invite you to add your comments. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sam Darnold tossed aside his stoic demeanor for a moment after realizing he was on the videoboard, aggressively twirling a towel to further stoke the crowd's fire after the Minnesota Vikings had pulled away from Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons late in the game. “I just felt the buzz. That was pure passion, pure joy, man,” Darnold said. Darnold added yet another highlight to his brilliant first season with the Vikings, passing for 347 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs, in a 42-21 victory over the foundering Falcons on Sunday to stretch their winning streak to six games. “It just felt like it was one of those days to keep the gas pedal down,” said coach Kevin O'Connell, who enjoyed his team's first 40-point game in three seasons on the job. Darnold passed for 250 yards after halftime to help the Vikings (11-2) break a 21-all tie early in the fourth quarter and stay one game behind NFC North-leading Detroit with a final-week matchup looming with the Lions. Jordan Addison had eight catches for 133 yards and three scores and Justin Jefferson racked up seven receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns after going the past six games without scoring. “This is something that we want to do and we can do every single week,” Jefferson said. Cousins, whose departure in free agency for Atlanta prompted Minnesota to sign Darnold as a bridge to currently injured rookie J.J. McCarthy, threw two more interceptions without a touchdown in this unhappy homecoming following a mixed six-year run with the Vikings. Booed as he took the field, Cousins and the Falcons (6-7) left with a fourth consecutive loss to tumble out of first place in the NFC South and fall one game behind Tampa Bay. “When you’re playing well you usually aren’t as good as people are telling you when they’re patting you on the back, and if you’re in a rut you’re usually not as bad as people kind of leaving you for dead,” Cousins said. “The reality’s usually somewhere in the middle. You just have to keep playing and see where the dust settles in January.” Cousins went 23 for 37 for 344 yards for the Falcons, who crossed midfield on all nine of their possessions and finished with 496 total yards. He overthrew Ray-Ray McCloud III on fourth down in the first quarter, and the Falcons settled for short field goals just before and right after halftime. Their fate was sealed when McCloud fumbled the kickoff at the 32 after the Vikings went 70 yards in six plays for the go-ahead touchdown pass to Addison, who scored again seven plays later. The Falcons handed the Vikings an earlier touchdown when Kentavious Street was called for defensive holding during a field-goal attempt late in the second quarter, giving Darnold a fresh set of downs before a 12-yard laser to Jefferson on a post route on third-and-6. “You just can’t have the self-inflicted wounds and expect to win football games like we had today,” coach Raheem Morris said. Bijan Robinson had 22 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown and Tyler Allgeier rushed nine times for 63 yards and a score for the Falcons against the NFL’s leading run defense. Cousins, who was picked off four times last week, hesitated as he wound up to throw on first down from the Minnesota 47 in a tie game early in the second quarter and then inexplicably fired a pass straight to Josh Metellus as he sat in a zone in front of Drake London. Cousins has a NFL -most 15 interceptions. Byron Murphy snagged an overthrow for the second one near the goal line with a 35-21 lead and 6:26 left. Darnold, who went 22 for 28 without a turnover-worthy play despite heavy first-half pressure, then directed a seven-play, 98-yard drive to seal it. “I think we grew up a lot today offensively,” O'Connell said. Standout stats Addison and Jefferson became the first duo in Vikings history to each have 100-plus receiving yards and two-plus touchdown catches in the same game. Addison also became the first Vikings player with three receiving touchdowns in a game since Stefon Diggs caught three from Cousins in 2019. Murphy has six interceptions this season, the most for the Vikings since Jimmy Hitchcock had seven in 1998. Injury report Falcons: CB Mike Hughes (knee) was back in the lineup after missing two games. Minnesota's 2018 first-round draft pick returned an interception for a touchdown against Atlanta in his NFL debut here. Vikings: CB Stephon Gilmore (hamstring) and backup OLB Patrick Jones (knee) were out. TE Josh Oliver (wrist/ankle) returned from a two-game absence, and LS Andrew DePaola (hand) and PK Will Reichard (quadriceps) were back from four-game injured reserve stints. Up next Both teams play next Monday night, Dec. 16: Atlanta visits Las Vegas, and Minnesota hosts Chicago. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Dave Campbell, The Associated Press
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans certainly didn’t look like a playoff team in a rout by the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday. With just one game left until the playoffs begin, the AFC South champions know they’ll have to get much better to be competitive in the postseason. “That’s not who we are. That’s not what we represent,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “What we put out there on the field, that’s not Texans football. For anybody to come back and bounce back from it you’ve got to check yourself and make sure you’re playing with elite execution and elite energy.” The 29-point loss to the Ravens was Houston’s most lopsided defeat this season. The defense gave up a season-high 251 yards rushing and the offense was shut out, with the team’s only points coming on a second-quarter safety. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw an interception and missed several throws in a performance he called “one of the worst games of my whole career.” He was asked how he and the team can move on from such a tough loss. “That’s the only thing we can do,” he said. “There is nothing in life you can go ... back and re-do, so it’s all about how you respond. You hit rock bottom; the only way is up. So, we still have a lot of hope. At the end of the day, we clinched our division. We still have an opportunity in the playoffs.” The Texans (9-7) went 0 for 2 in the red zone Wednesday to lower their red zone efficiency to 50.94% this season, which ranks 26th in the NFL. After their safety Wednesday, they had a chance to cut the lead or potentially tie the game when they had a first down at the 10-yard line. Joe Mixon ran for 7 yards on first down before the drive stalled. He was dropped for a 1-yard loss on second down before an incompletion by Stroud brought up fourth-and-4. Stroud threw a short pass to Mixon and he was stopped at the 1-yard line to give the Ravens the ball back. Lamar Jackson then led a 99-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-2. What's working Not much was working in this debacle. About the only good thing that happened for the Texans on Wednesday was a 45-yard kickoff return by Dameon Pierce in the second quarter to start the drive that ended with Mixon being stopped on fourth down. The second-year player is averaging 38.1 yards per return. What needs help The Texans managed just 58 yards rushing against the Ravens with Mixon gaining 26 yards on nine carries. Houston hasn’t reached 100 yards rushing in three straight games and four of its past five. The Texans must get their running game going to take some pressure off Stroud, who is working with a thin receiving group with Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs out for the season with knee injuries. Stock up WR John Metchie led the team with five receptions for 48 yards as he took on a bigger role in the offense in the first game without Dell. It’s the second-most yards Metchie has had in a three-year career where he missed his entire rookie season undergoing cancer treatments. Stock down Wednesday was the second time in three games where Mixon was held to fewer than 30 yards rushing. He started the season strong, running for at least 100 yards in six of his first eight games. But he’s struggled since then, reaching 100 yards just once in five games. Injuries G Shaq Mason missed Wednesday’s game after injuring his knee against the Chiefs and it’s unclear if he can return for the next game. ... C/G Juice Scruggs missed a fourth straight game with foot injury. Key number 59.2 — Stroud had a 59.2 passer rating in the loss, which is tied for the third-worst rating of his career. Next steps After playing three games in 11 days, the Texans now have an extended break before wrapping up the regular season next weekend at Tennessee. Stroud will try and use this setback to get better. “There’s not sunny days if there is not days with rain,” he said. “It’s a rainy day but at the end of the day the sun will rise up tomorrow. We have another crack at this thing next week to keep rolling.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflBILLINGS, MONT. — The University of Jamestown women’s basketball team sailed to a comfortable 85-47 win over the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (Canada) on Sunday, Dec. 29, at Rocky Mountain College’s Fortin Education Center. The Jimmies held the Trojans to 2-for-14 from three and 3-for-13 from the free throw line while the Jimmies shot 16-for-41 from three and 19-for-27 from the free throw line. The Jimmies never trailed again taking a 19-9 lead into the second quarter. The Jimmies (11-1) took their largest lead of the day to that point midway through the second quarter when Kate Cordes hit a layup to make it 34-19. The Jimmies kept it up from there taking a 39-25 lead into the half. Late in the third quarter, the Jimmies were able to take a 24-point lead into the final quarter of play. With 34 seconds to go in the game, the Jimmies’ Jessica Oberlander hit a free throw to give her team an 85-45 lead.
