OTTAWA — Two senior members of the federal cabinet were in Florida Friday pushing Canada's new border plan with Donald Trump's transition team, a day after Trudeau himself appeared to finally push back at the president-elect over his social media posts about turning Canada into the 51st state. Both Trudeau and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who Trudeau has been courting to become Canada's next finance minister, shared posts on X Thursday, a day after Trump's latest jab at Canada in his Christmas Day message. It isn't clear if Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who has repeatedly insisted Trump's 51st state references are a joke, will raise the issue with Trump's team when he and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly meet with them in Palm Beach. The two are there to discuss Canada's new $1.3 billion border plan with just under four weeks left before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada's plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada LeBlanc's spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, said the ministers will also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump's threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers will build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau "governor" instead of prime minister. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw "explains Canada to Americans." The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. "In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada," Brokaw says in the video. Trudeau did not expand about why he posted a link to the video, posting it only with the words "some information about Canada for Americans." Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau's recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump's antics on X Thursday, calling it "casual disrespect" and "carrying the 'joke' too far." "Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership," said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland's sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau's leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. He is currently vacationing in British Columbia. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024. Alessia Passafiume, The Canadian Press
Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey remains on the hot seat as Karen Read’s defense team argues he has used his personal cellphone and email to communicate with the court and witnesses in the case. Defense attorney David Yannetti has said he learned that Morrissey’s text messages are “somehow remarkably set to auto-delete after 30 days,” sparking concern about what the DA may be hiding. “That obviously raises some questions for us, maybe the subject of a future motion, but more immediately, the concern is that every day that passes we’re losing text messages from 30 days prior,” Yannetti said at the end of a hearing at Norfolk Superior Court last week. Read’s defense team filed a motion in early November to look into Morrissey’s personal email and cellphone for any reference to their client’s case, saying they have evidence he’s made improper communications. Yannetti expanded on the request last Tuesday, detailing how they’d like to search Morrissey’s personal iCloud email for references of “Read” and “Reed,” names of relevant witnesses, all judges who have sat on the case and clerk’s office employees at Stoughton District Court and Norfolk Superior Court. “We don’t know if he did that for the purpose of avoiding a FOIA request or if he just misspelled my client’s name,” Yannetti said of Morrissey spelling his client’s last name “Reed.” “We have reason not to trust Mr. Morrissey in the light of his actions using this personal email account to make an ex parte communication,” Yannetti added, “and we ask that a more thorough search be done for these types of communications.” The defense has taken exception to how Morrissey communicated ex parte with personnel and judges at Stoughton District Court, according to “documentary evidence.” Morrissey’s personal cellphone and email use sprung into the spotlight amid the witness intimidation case involving Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney . The Holden-based journalist has extensively covered the Read case on his blogs and social media accounts from an intensely pro-Read perspective, and he has been charged with intimidating witnesses in Read’s case for her benefit. Read’s defense team requested access to Morrissey’s personal cellphone and email after Kearney’s attorney Mark Bederow filed a similar motion in October. Bederow claimed Morrissey used his personal email address to chastise Stoughton District Court for “leaking” information about a public proceeding against Kearney to the defendant and that his communications included screenshots of text messages from a pro-prosecution witness in Read’s case, as well as other information indicating more than one witness was in communication with the DA’s office. Public officials’ use of private emails for government business is considered a violation of state law. In a blog post on Nov. 19 , Kearney highlighted how his defense team filed another motion in Norfolk Superior Court asking specifically for “access to Morrissey’s private email account that he used to communicate with judges ex parte about Turtleboy’s activism on September 29, 2023.” “It’s clear from the postings that Stoughton Court is directly involved in this dissemination of information affecting our murder prosecution,” Morrissey wrote in an email that day to Stacey Fortes, chief justice of the Massachusetts District Court. Kearney included a screenshot of the communication in his post. “From the comments from one of the witnesses, you can see that they have clearly lost all confidence in the Courts of the Commonwealth,” Morrissey continued. “I have to agree that the actions erode the trust and integrity between the courts and the public and the relationship with the District Attorney’s Office.” On Friday, Kearney posted on his X account that the court “withheld ‘embarrassing’ emails. (Morrissey) used this account regularly to email dozens of judges about court business. He even mocked the trial courts and their efficiency in one email.” Also Friday, Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone, overseeing the Read murder case, denied the prosecution’s request for her parents’ phone records, which they said could have bolstered their argument that the defendant knew she struck and left John O’Keefe to die in a snowstorm. Read, 44, of Mansfield, is charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death in the killing of her boyfriend of roughly two years, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, in the early morning of Jan. 29, 2022. Prosecutors say that she struck O’Keefe with her SUV after yet another drunken bout of fighting in the troubled relationship, and left him to freeze and die on the front yard of a Canton home where the pair was supposed to continue a night out after the bars closed. The defense counters that O’Keefe made it inside that home and was killed by others inside, including possibly then-homeowner Brian Albert, who was a fellow Boston Police officer. It alleges the well-connected police family then worked with local and state police investigators to cover up the crime and frame Read. Read’s first trial ended with a hung jury in July. The defense and prosecution have requested the retrial, scheduled for late January, be pushed back to April. Morrissey has received backlash after he blasted internet trolls in an August 2023 video for spreading “baseless” theories in the case. “The harassment of witnesses in the murder prosecution of Karen Read is absolutely baseless,” the DA said in the video, which he described as “the first statement of its kind” in his tenure. “It should be an outrage to any decent person — and it needs to stop. Innuendo is not evidence. False narratives are not evidence.” “However, what evidence does show is that John O’Keefe never entered the home at 34 Fairview Road in Canton on the night he died,” he added. “Location data from his phone — recovered from the lawn beneath his body when he was transported to the hospital — shows that his phone did not enter that home.” Morrissey is up for reelection in 2026 and faces two candidates who have already vowed to run for the position.

And fittingly, that's how it ended for the Cyclones. Game MVP Rocco Becht scored from a yard out on fourth-and-goal with 56 seconds remaining and No. 18 Iowa State capped the best season in school history by rallying past No. 15 Miami 42-41 in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday. Becht finished with 270 passing yards and three touchdowns for Iowa State (11-2), a program that entered this season — the 133rd year of Cyclone football — never having won more than nine games in a year. “If you look at this team, it’s really who they’ve been all year,” coach Matt Campbell said. The win marked the fourth time in 2024 that Iowa State got a winning score with less than two minutes remaining. For this one, the Cyclones rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half — with Miami quarterback Cam Ward watching after a record-setting first half — to get win No. 11. Carson Hansen rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Iowa State. And as the MVP, Becht got the honor of choosing which flavor Pop-Tart was to be sacrificed in a giant toaster. “There's only one,” Becht said. “Cinnamon roll.” Ward passed for three touchdowns in his final college game, while Damien Martinez rushed for a career-high 179 yards for Miami (10-3), which dropped its sixth straight bowl game and lost three of four games to end the season — those three losses by a combined 10 points. "Disappointed that we couldn't pull out a victory," Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “These guys have always fought and always competed and this was no exception. ... It's painful. It's as painful as it gets when you don't win. But there's a lot to build on.” NEBRASKA 20, BOSTON COLLEGE 15: Dylan Raiola passed for 228 yards and a touchdown as Nebraska built an 18-point lead through three quarters and hung on for its first bowl victory since 2015. Raiola hit Emmett Johnson with a 13-yard TD pass on fourth down with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter for a 20-2 edge and the Cornhuskers (7-6) held on for the win at Yankee Stadium. Raiola completed 23 of 31 passes in front of a sizable Nebraska crowd that celebrated the team's first bowl win since topping UCLA in the 2015 Foster Farms Bowl and first winning season since 2016. Raiola completed passes to 10 receivers, including Jahmal Banks, who finished with four receptions for 79 yards. Grayson James finished 25 of 40 for 296 yards as Boston College (7-6). UCONN 27, NORTH CAROLINA 14: Joe Fagnano threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help the Huskies (9-4) beat the Tar Heels (6-7) at Fenway Park, embarrassing incoming coach Bill Belichick's new team in his old backyard. Mel Brown rushed for 96 yards for UConn and Skyler Bell caught three passes for 77 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown that gave the Huskies a 10-0 first-quarter lead. Chris Culliver returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, but that would be Carolina's only production in the first half. TCU 34, LOUISIANA 3: Josh Hoover passed for four touchdowns as the Horned Frogs (9-4) routed the Ragin' Cajuns (10-4) in Albuquerque. Hoover was 20 for 32 for 252 yards with an interception. Eric McAlister had eight catches for 87 yards and a TD for the Horned Frogs. TCU's defense also had a solid day, holding Louisiana-Lafayette to 209 yards, including 61 on the game's final possession. LATE FRIDAY LAS VEGAS BOWL USC 35, TEXAS A&M 31: Jayden Maiava threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Ford with eight seconds left to give Southern California the victory over Texas A&M (8-5) in the Las Vegas Bowl. A graduate of Liberty High School in nearby Henderson and a transfer from UNLV, Maiava helped the Trojans (7-6) overcome a 17-point deficit.

The KIDS COUNT County Data Book was compiled and released by Kentucky Youth Advocates. Kids Count is part of a national initiative by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and measures child well-being based on a variety of measures — education, family life, trauma, incarceration and more. In the school year ending in 2019, the book shows, about 51% of Kentucky’s kids were kindergarten-ready. For the 2023-2024 school year, that was down to 48%. Terry Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates, explained that small things — like letter magnets on the fridge — can help introduce young children to written language and prepare them to read. “It’s as simple as reading to your kid,” he told the Lantern. But, once children reach the school, educators need to be willing to meet them where they are as well, he said, because not all children will learn to read the same way. “I think the primary school experience in Kentucky looks a lot more like an assembly line than a personalized menu,” Brooks said, “and we need to get back to that personalized menu.” Not all education data was negative, though. The number of fourth graders who are proficient in reading, eighth graders who are proficient in math and high school students graduating on time have all improved. In 2024, Kids Count says, “more Kentucky children are experiencing adverse childhood experiences than ever before.” Adverse childhood experiences, more commonly known as ACEs, refer to traumas or stressors in a person’s life before their 18th birthday. They include, but are not limited to experiencing or witnessing violence, abuse or neglect; living in a home where someone has a substance use disorder or other mental health issues; living through a parental separation and more. Keep up with the latest NKY news with our daily newsletter Sign up ACEs have a far-reaching impact on adulthood, too, as survivors are more likely to have chronic health conditions including cancer, diabetes and heart disease; experience poverty; have pregnancy problems; be involved in sex trafficking; suffer from stress; and some may even go on to perpetuate ACEs, feeding a reciprocating spiral of illness and violence. The more ACEs a child lives through, the greater their chance of having long- term complications. Almost 1 in 4 — 23% — of Kentucky’s children have experienced at least two ACEs. That’s significantly higher than the national average, which is about 17%. “If today is a typical day in Kentucky, one out of five kids woke up living in deep poverty,” Brooks said during a Wednesday press conference to launch the book. “And tonight, if today is a typical day in Kentucky, one in five kids are going to go to bed hungry.” The state has made some strides over the last decade, according to Kids Count, including passing laws to ensure educators learn about ACE s and “ closing gaps ” in the background check process for people working with children. But gaps remain. From the 2024 KIDS COUNT “Minimal legislative progress” has been made to “teach youth to protect themselves by providing age-appropriate information on healthy boundaries and relationships,” according to the report, which also points out the legislature cut funds for the Health Access Nurturing Development Services program ( HANDS ), a voluntary home visitation program for any new or expectant parents. To combat ACEs, children need access to positive childhood experiences (PCEs), which can include having supportive and safe family, feeling a sense of belonging, feeling supported by friends, having at least two non-parent adults who care about them and more. “We emphasize each year that what gets measured, gets changed,” Brooks said, “and this year, I’m urging our policymakers to hear: what can be predicted can be prevented. Understanding ACEs and PCEs creates that opportunity to measure risk and pave the way for prevention.” Two youth advocates spoke alongside Brooks and others, detailing how positive experiences have helped them succeed in life. Aleah Stigall, a Boyle County High School sophomore, said being involved in pageantry helped connect her to mentors and friends that she felt she lacked as an only child. She also founded an initiative called Disconnect to Connect – Let’s Get Real, which she said “strives to teach students how to have real relationships with real people without technology.” “This goes hand in hand with developing strong connections with mentors so one can learn new skills throughout childhood and even adulthood,” said Stigall, 16. Another youth advocate, Issabella Cornett from Graves County, said support she’s felt through health challenges helped her develop “resilience.” “Throughout my childhood, positive experiences have been made by access to reliable health care and the conflict support my teachers, friends, family and my medical team,” Cornett said. ” These positive resources have been essential in allowing me to navigate major health challenges, including chronic migraines, kidney disease and various allergies.” Shannon Moody, KYA’s chief policy and strategy officer, said everyone can help create a better future for young people. “What we know is while the prevalence of PCEs, or positive childhood experiences, are just not quite as documented or heavily studied, we do know that they are common, and with these stories that you heard today, I think you can see them on a day to day basis in your community,” she said. “Stable housing, access to health services and safe family and community environments can set young people up for a lifetime of health, stability and success.” The book recommends several policy “solutions” to address Kentucky’s child well-being gaps. They include: “The question that I have about all the work that went into Kids Count is really simple: will we see the General Assembly match its rhetoric with action on behalf of kids in 2025,” Brooks said. “I’m both hopeful and scared to death to answer that question.” To read the whole Kids Count book, go here . BIV Forty Under 40 Awards: Chris Quinn
In their final fixture of 2024, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game midway through the opening period. Arsenal’s victory takes them back to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played one match more than the Reds, and a point clear of Chelsea following their Boxing Day defeat to Fulham. Ipswich, although much improved in the second half, have now lost five of their last six games, and remain just one place off the bottom of the table, three points away from safety. Mikel Arteta’s men have been rocked by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury which could keep the England winger, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, out of action for the next two months. Gabriel Martinelli was handed the unenviable task of filling Saka’s shoes on Arsenal’s right-hand side and the Brazilian was involved in the only goal of the evening. The Ipswich defence failed to deal with Martinelli’s cross, with the ball falling to Leandro Trossard on the opposite side of the area. Trossard fought his way to the byline before fizzing his cross into the box for Havertz to convert from a matter of yards. It was Havertz’s third goal in four matches, his 12th of the season, and no less than the hosts, who at that stage of the match had enjoyed a staggering 91.4 per cent of the possession, deserved. Heading into Friday’s fixture, Arsenal had lost only one of their last 75 Premier League games when they had opened the scoring, and their triumph here rarely looked in doubt following Havertz’s strike. Havertz thought he had doubled Arsenal’s lead with 34 minutes gone when he converted Gabriel Jesus’ cross. But Jesus – handed his third successive start for the first time in a year – strayed into an offside position in the build-up. When referee Darren England blew for half-time, Ipswich had failed to touch the ball in Arsenal’s box, becoming just the second side to do so in the Premier League this season. Nottingham Forest were the other, away at Liverpool, before they went on to inflict Arne Slot’s sole defeat of his tenure so far. And for all of Arsenal’s possession, while they held just a one-goal advantage, Ipswich knew they were still in the game. An encouraging start to the second half for the Tractor Boys ensued, albeit without testing David Raya in the Arsenal goal. Shortly after the hour mark, Gabriel should have settled any growing Emirates nerves when he arrived unmarked to Declan Rice’s corner, but the defender headed wide of Arijanet Muric’s post when it looked easier to score. Martin Odegaard then forced a fine fingertip save from Muric at his near post after a mazy run and shot from the Arsenal skipper. Rice’s stinging goal-bound volley from the following corner was blocked by Dara O’Shea as Arsenal pushed for a game-killing second. Havertz should have tapped home Trossard’s header but he fluffed his lines. And moments later, substitute Mikel Merino’s effort was diverted from danger by a diving Muric. Ipswich looked to catch Arsenal on the counter, but the match ended without them registering a single effort on Raya’s goal. Ipswich fans goaded their opponents with chants of “boring, boring Arsenal”, but it was the Gunners who enjoyed the last laugh as they saw out 2024 with a win which keeps the pressure on Liverpool.Liz Earle's 'cosy' £62 perfume slashed to under £10 in Black Friday weekend deal stack

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—This year’s National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) focused on advancements to promote a green and sustainable circular economy through science, technology, and innovation (STI) as it opened in this city on November 27. With the theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Kinabukasan” with the sub-theme “Providing Solutions and Opening Opportunities in the Green Economy,” it showcased over 100 technology exhibits, 30 technical fora, pitching sessions, and career talks. “This year’s event is a bold declaration that [STI] are not just centered in the nation’s capital. We are here in Cagayan de Oro City, proving that regional growth is fueled by the dynamic force of STI,” said DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. in his keynote speech. The five-day event highlighted the innovative contributions of Filipino scientists, engineers, and researchers to the growth of science and technology in the country. The Science chief emphasized the need to involve local government units (LGUs) in STI initiatives, noting that scientific community partners would welcome the chance to highlight and showcase their innovations in the regions, rather than just in the National Capital Region (NCR). ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ campaign; AmBisyon Nation 2040’ Solidum pointed out the critical role of STI as catalysts for advancing national development and enhancing the quality of life for Filipinos. He said that this aligns with the administration’s “Bagong Pilipinas” campaign and the long-term goals outlined in “AmBisyon Natin 2040.” “Our future depends on how effectively we harness the power of STI to create a nation where every Filipino experiences progress, prosperity, and security,” he said. The Science chief illustrated how each of the values—Matatag, Maginhawa and Panatag—are realized through investments in STI. A Matatag society is where families thrive, communities are resilient, and trust in governance is strong. Through DOST’s Community Empowerment through Science and Technology program, STI interventions uplift marginalized sectors At the same time, Maginhawa, where there is a comfortable life for all, free from poverty, the DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) is turning this vision into reality by supporting over 9,000 MSMEs, creating 316,000 jobs, and injecting P8.7 billion into the economy. In a country highly vulnerable to natural hazards, Panatag—secure and protected from disasters—is a top priority. Its agencies— Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical Services Administration and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology—play a vital role in safeguarding communities with cutting-edge technologies. The state-of-the-art Doppler radars and seismic stations to the innovative GeoRisk Philippines app provide real-time data that enhance disaster preparedness, mitigate risks, and save lives, Solidum said. He also outlined eight major R&D programs for 2025 to address critical challenges in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. These include the AI Virtual Hub, Geospatial Analytics Solutions, Quantum Computing, and Industry 4.0. The programs also prioritize fostering circular economy, promoting smart agriculture, advancing smart technologies, and innovating biologics in the pharmaceutical sector to drive innovation, enhance sustainability, and bolster the country›s competitiveness in the global market. Addressing challenges, empowering communities For her part, DOST Undersecretary Maridon Sahagun, for Scientific and Technical Services said: ”We reaffirm our commitment to bringing [STI] closer to this region to address various challenges, tap into growth potentials, and empower communities, all while pursuing a green and circular economy.” Sahagun said the five-day event highlighted the DOST’s efforts in four key areas: promoting human well-being, fostering wealth creation, ensuring wealth protection, and advancing sustainability. The featured technologies and activities address critical challenges in areas such as climate change, agriculture, and environmental conservation, offering timely and appropriate solutions to pave the way for sustainable development. Sahagun, also the chairman of the 2024 NSTW-Steering Committee, emphasized the cutting-edge technologies and S&T products at the center stage during the five-day event. The Human Well-Being Technologies initiative delved on critical challenges in health, education, and accessibility included groundbreaking innovations. They are the Immersive Gamification Technology System (ImGTS) for dementia care, Intelligent Stroke Utilization, Learning, Assessment, and Testing (i-Sulat) for early childhood assessment, Ensayo for empowering visually impaired individuals, and nutrition-focused solutions like the Enhanced Nutribun. The Wealth Creation Technologies aim to boost industries and livelihoods through initiatives like Advanced Manufacturing Center for advanced 3D printing; sustainable Silk and Natural Dyes Hubs; SAFEWATRS for mobile water purification; and commercialization programs like Galing and Technicom that support Filipino innovators. Meanwhile, Wealth Protection Technologies enhance disaster resilience with tools like Impact-Based Forecasting, SatREx, and AI-powered systems, such as SkAI-Pinas; while education-focused projects like Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal (REIINN) bridge digital divides to strengthen community preparedness. Sustainability efforts led by DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development include innovative solutions such as the Remote Online Surveilance for Banana (Rosanna) app for banana disease monitoring; ACTICon biopesticide for sustainable pest control; and the eco-friendly Pest to Feed technology, complemented by biodiversity education tools for environmental stewardship. ‘Need to change the way we do things’ Solidum added that, with support from national government agencies and LGUs, the Science department will persist in deploying technological solutions on the ground and implementing innovative, tailored interventions, as sticking to the status quo is no longer an option. “We need to change the way we do things, and we need to start sooner,” the Science secretary said, adding that current data suggests an unstable global trajectory. He pointed out that while technology and innovation are essential in driving production, wealth creation, and job opportunities, they also come with a shared responsibility—with conscious, intentional, and accountable management of both production and consumption. Endless pursuit of growth, he noted, has consequences. The development and progress achieved over recent years have come at the cost of the environment that the society continues to pay. He recalled that in recent weeks, the country, particularly Luzon, has faced an unprecedented surge of four typhoons within a span of 10 days, marking a record-breaking intensification of the Pacific typhoon season, according to the science secretary. “The impacts have been devastating,” he added, with the agriculture sector, which supports millions of Filipino families, hit hard. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority reveal that the combined agricultural losses from six typhoons in the third quarter of 2024, along with Severe Typhoon Kristine, amounted to P15.8 billion, while damage to infrastructure, homes, and other assets is estimated at P9.6 billion. “These repeated losses threaten not only our farmers’ livelihoods but also our nation’s food security and economic stability,” Solidum said. “Filipinos are often portrayed as victims of disasters, but through science, technology, innovation, and collaboration, we can rewrite this narrative,” Solidum said. “Let us redefine disaster resilience not only as surviving but also as building economic strength and prosperity in the face of adversity,” he said. The 2024 NSTW was attended by various stakeholders, including LGUs’ representatives, startups, enterprises, legislators, executives, students, and the general public.Guwahati, Dec 28 (IANS): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has decided to run all 60 pairs of passenger trains with their regular numbers as they were running prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, officials said here on Saturday. A senior official of the NFR said that as per a decision by the Railway Board, all NFR-run passenger trains (ICF/DEMU/LHB) would be operated with regular number (instead of the existing ‘0’ numbering system). All the 60 pairs of passenger trains would operate as per earlier frequency with their earlier train numbers from January 2025 onwards, he said. Out of the 60 pairs of passenger trains, four pairs would operate from Tinsukia Division, 19 pairs from Lumding Division, 10 pairs from Rangiya Division, six pairs from Alipurduar Division (West Bengal) and 21 pairs would operate from Katihar Division (Bihar). The details of stoppages and timings of all the 60 pairs of trains are available on the IRCTC website and the social media platforms of the NFR. According to the official, during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21, the railway ran special trains with a little higher fare and these systems still continued. The NFR operates in the northeastern states and in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of northern Bihar with more than 6,400 km of tracks in its jurisdiction. The official said that the NFR has been making a constant endeavour to make train journeys safer and secure. He said that during the month of November, the NFR installed Thick Web Switch Point machines with clamp-type locking in 31 stations across the zone to further improve the safety features. To further enhance efficiency and safety, NFR has carried out various upgrades and replacements to its existing signalling system in several sections within the zone, the official stated.Meet the High-Performing Infrastructure Stock That's Crucial to Supporting This Massive $3 Trillion Megatrend
